Wokingham Decra Tiled Roof

Just converted this old polycarbonate twinwall conservatory roof to a nice looking lightweight tile
from the Decra range

Decra roofing tiles are designed to provide an attractive and economic finish for all types of roof down to 10° pitch. The lightweight roofing system comprises coated, galvanised steel tile panels with the appearance of traditional roof tiles.

Decra Classic lightweight roof tiles provide an attractive and economic finish for all types of roof down to 10° pitch. The system, which is available in five colours, comprises of coated, zinc aluminium galvanised steel tile panels with the appearance of traditional clay or concrete roofing tiles.
A comprehensive choice of roofing accessories, including eaves, ridge and roof tile ventilators, completes the lightweight roofing system which is totally dry fixed throughout. Each roof tile has a downturned front edge and an upturned rear edge, and is profiled to provide a strong overlapping and interlocking roof covering. Decra’s lightweight roofing tiles are produced in large format. Correct way to install damp course to chimney stack

Customer had damp to the internal walls several attempts had been made on roof repairs
It was obvious to us the existing dpc had broken down and the only way to cure the problem was by installation of a lead damp proof course, this entailed the removal of the brickwork to old dpc level installation of lead and re-building the chimney stack.

ROOF COATING IS IT WORTH THE MONEY

Below you can find a selection of quotes and links to articles written by the press, government bodies and on web forums. Some of these links refer to specific companies or rogue traders while other articles refer to the products and how useless they often are:

12 Month Prison Sentence for Director of Roof Coating Company

Company Director and Salesman are both sentenced to 12 months in prison. After the court case, Herefordshire Council’s head of consumer and business protection, Mike Pigrem, said:
I believe this is a landmark case exposing the ‘roof coating scam’ which has taken hold in the UK over the last decade…..In our opinion there is no doubt that moss causes no damage whatsoever to tiles and the roof coating process is a wholly unnecessary treatment.
Source: Herefordshire Council Website

Hereford County Council Warning

Herefordshire Council’s principal trading standards officer, Tim Thorne, said:
Cold calling for roof coating services is one of the biggest scams to have swept the UK in recent years. Moss does not damage your roof and should never be washed off in this way. Painting the tiles serves no useful purpose whatsoever and the whole process is simply unnecessary work.
Source: Herefordshire Council Website

Derbyshire Trading Standards Warning

Here is an extract from the Derbyshire Trading Standards team:
Roof tiles are designed to allow air to circulate in the roof space, so simply painting the tiles will provide no benefit to your homes’ thermal efficiency.  In addition, the use of high-pressure hoses to clean the roof can actually damage tiles and force water in to the roof space.
Source: Derbyshire Trading Standards

Warickshire Trading Standards Warning

This article contains information about a specific roof coating scammer, but also contains the following advice:
Roofing experts warn that roof tiles should not be subject to high-pressure washing. To do so can potentially damage or break the tiles and remove any aesthetic granular tile finish. Further, pressure washing can also force water between the tile and roofing felt, spraying water in to the roof space/loft.
Source: Warickshire Trading Standards

Telegraph and Daily Mail Newspaper Articles

Article in the Telegraph newspaper written by Jeff Howel, great info on the tricks some coating companies use.
Daily Mail article about how a group of scammers painted roofs red and conned £250,000 from elderly people.

National Federation of Roofing Contractors Warning

Here is a press release from the NFRC:
Most ‘techniques’ that we have come across to remove moss, are often achieved by ‘violent’ means such as power-washing, which may cause damage to the roof, especially when combined with unnecessary foot traffic often leading to cracked or broken roof tiles.
More information can be found here.

BBC Rogue Traders Programme

BBC Rogue Traders investigation into a roof coating company charging high fees for a useless product. Note how the company flooded the loft space by using pressure washers on the roof. You can read my article on why a roof should never be pressure washed.

Roofing in Camberley Surrey

Like any other tradesmen, it’s often complex and confusing when selecting the correct company to fix or renew your roof, particularly the variation in costings from one roofer or roofing company to the next. So, how do you know you’re getting a good roofing company? That they can be trusted, know what they’re doing, will do it on time and look after your peace of mind as well as your property?
The costs can be poles apart for the same job with the same materials from different companies, so here’s out handy guide to choosing the best roofing company:
  • Get three estimates for the same work with the same materials.
  • Find out how long each business has been established and their roofing credentials/membership of professional bodies.
  • Be specific about the job when asking for a quote.
  •  Make sure the quotes include everything that needs done and there are no ‘extras’  - or at least make sure they inform you IN WRITING that extras may have to be added and what they are for.
  • What about service after the work has been done?
  • Do not be afraid to ask questions. It’s your house and property. If something is niggling you about their work, estimate, materials, timescales, ask them. If they don’t have a good answer, don’t hire them.
  • Ask about their health and safety policy – is there one?
  • Look for the contractors’ public profile. Are they members of professional bodies? Do they have testimonials from other clients? Proper signage on vans? What other work have they undertaken? Check the internet for anything about them on websites and forums.
It all comes down to trust in the end. So, if in doubt, don’t hire!

Pretty good advice you would think! but does anyone really take any notice

Saturday morning 3 men pulled up at my neighbours' in Camberley Surrey knocked on the door asked if he wanted his hedge cut they were there 20 mins cutting the hedge looked ok I suppose and I assume he paid them and the were on their way with a bit of cash in their hand.

I got a phone call from my wife around 9 on Monday morning someone is up on the neighbours roof stripping of tiles, no scaffold no handrail just off ladders, I was only local to Camberley so I went home to have a look, the gardeners from Saturday were now roofers I asked what the were planning and they  told me they were doing the fascia's as all the wood was rotten I asked if they were aware that the soffit boards were asbestos based I then got a load of verbal abuse.

Who should this be reported to I thought?
Trading Standards, HSE, Environmental Health , Local Council, Citizens advice

Well I tried to contact them all  and got absolutely nowhere
And who pays their wages the general public for no service whatsoever

So carry on lads its perfectly ok to work off ladders, strip out asbestos cement soffits rip people off because no one cares at all.

I pay thousands in Public Liability Insurance, Use a scaffold, take notice of HSE guidelines, Licenced to carry any waste I produce, Pay fees every month to several trade associations, and pay tax and insurance to HMRC

WHY DO I BOTHER

Thinking about getting a caravan few ladders go knocking on peoples doors I'll be driving round in a Bentley in no time

Competent Roofer

LABC – Pilot Scheme Starting Soon
Working with Competent Roofer, LABC will be clamping down on roof refurbishment work that is being undertaken without notification to Building Control. They will be contacting roofing companies either based or operating in areas they have selected to target within England and Wales.

If they find roofing work that hasn’t been reported, they will systematically look through records of that company’s jobs, if necessary over an extended back-dated period. This means as a member of Competent Roofer you must  be logging and completing your work; you will not be immune to this spot check.

I find this quite interesting being a member of Competent roofer we always inform customers they have notify building control if a roof is to be replaced, and that if insufficient insulation is present it should be upgraded.
I have found we are loosing a lot of work as most roofing companies in this area are completely ignoring this.
It is not only the roofers also local building control are unsure.

I recently quoted a flat roof in Bagshot told the customer he should have the insulation upgraded he decided to check with local building control to be told  if it is like for like then he does not have to insulate or inform the council, he therefore thought I was trying to get extra works and I lost the job only for someone to replace the roof without insulation

So who is right ? and are Building Control aware of Competent Roofer Scheme Surrey Heath obviously is not.

Roofing Services Camberley and Surrey areas

Did you know that a staggering 93% of all DIY expenditure in the UK goes on the internal decor of our homes, with a measly 2.5% allocated to probably THE most important part of your home or business premises – the roof.

Say what?

It’s true. A sound roof is fundamental to protecting your property and MAINTAINING IT’S VALUE, yet far too many people neglect the basic fabric of their home.
Think about it this way, a leaking or defective roof can cause IRREPARABLE long term structural damage. Whereas a change of colour scheme on your freshly primed walls is frankly a COMPLETE WASTE OF MONEY if, less than six months later, you’re forced to knock the whole thing back and start again.

So, to avoid the mass exterior neglect of our properties here in Surrey, we’ve designed a cost effective service before it’s too late!
Here’s how it works:

1. You have a leaking or insecure roof that needs fixing
2. You get in contact by telephone or our online form (click here)
3. We book an appointment to inspect your roof and identify the problem
4. We provide you with a pre-agreed FIXED PRICE quotation to fix your roof
5. If you wish us to proceed, we start the job as soon as possible
6. We fix your roof. And if we can’t fix it, you don’t pay us!
We can’t say fairer than that can we?

What type of roofing jobs do you carry out?

* General roof repairs (planned in advance)
* Emergency roof repairs (unplanned)
* Roof replacement (pitched & flat roofs)
* New build projects (small & large scale)
* Fascia boards, soffitts and bargeboards
* Gutters and downpipes (Upvc or cast iron)
* Chimney stacks, pots and ventilation

The biggest fear that most people have when it comes to getting their roof fixed is that they’ll end up with a stonking great invoice. This simply isn’t true. In fact, the average roof repair comes in at under £200, which is less than half of what most people spend on their food bill every month!

Low pitch roofing Aldershot

In any pitched roof design you should check that the tile you are proposing to use is designed for that specific pitch – your roofing contractor will be able to advise you on all the technical performance issues relating to individual tile products.

Which tile should be used on a roof of 80.

There are no tiles on the market that I know of that can be laid to a pitch as low as this

Just completed a small domestic extension roof which had been covered in a Redland 49 tile the underlay had rotted away allowing rainwater into the cavity walls causing a lot of damp internally.

We stripped the roof and supplied and fitted a new warm roof system using a  high performance felt system
Notice the slate roof next door !

Roofers Surrey roof repairs scam

ROOF COATERS ARE ABOUT

Does your roof really benefit from coating?

Does it last or are they just after a quick pound.

This is how it could look after just a few months

3 Sales Tricks to Avoid

While some salesmen and women are genuine, friendly and not too pushy the reality is there are many within the roofing industry that care about only one thing – getting you to part with your money so they can earn their commission.
Did you know that the average commission for a salesperson within the roofing industry is 15%?
That is course on top of any fixed/basic salary!
So if you were to sign on the dotted line for work totaling £4000, a whopping £600 of that will go direct the salesperson.
With that in mind, it should be no surprise to you that some will go to almost any length to get your signature.

Common Sales Tactics

Here are three of the most common tactics/tricks that used to get you to sign on that dreaded line:

1) Attempts to Rush You

This is a common tactic used by many salespeople. Within the roof coating industry you may encounter some/all of the following offers, all are designed to prevent you from doing research on the company, products or methods. These are tactics to get you to sign up quickly:
  • You will be their first customer on this street, so you are entitled to a huge discount. You must sign up now though, otherwise your neighbour may get this deal instead of you.
  • Offers that are only available for a limited time, such as the next four days.
  • The company is working in your area and has some materials left over, you are offered a huge discount but again you must sign up now.

2) Scare Tactics

This approach may not fool everyone, but if you are elderly or know nothing about roofs then you are a potential target of these scare tactics:
  •  The tiles on your roof are coming to the end of their life and either need replacing or sealing/coating with a liquid.
  • The roof has multiple issues which would cost a fortune to fix, but this company can carry out the work and apply a coating/sealant to prevent future problems.
  • The salesperson points out several other homes they have worked on in your area and claims the work was essential, he/she also claims your roof is in the same condition.

3) Confidence Tricks

  • The salesperson makes unrealistic claims about how your heating bills will be drastically reduced if you have this coating applied to the roof tiles.
  • Makes claims about how the value of your home will increase if you buy this product.
If you hear any of these claims made by a salesperson then the best thing to do is to ask them to leave you alone and leave your property.
Many roof coating companies employ canvassers to target certain areas en-masse. These people are almost always paid on commission and it doesn’t matter to them if your roof actually needs work doing or not, you are their pay cheque and for this reason we advises everyone to ignore all door-to-door canvassers regardless of what they are selling.
A genuine roofing company would visit a customer to inspect the roof and answer any questions before creating a quotation that can be left with the customer so he/she can decide if they want to proceed, do some more research or get other quotes to compare the prices.
Companies to avoid are those that use the sales tactics listed on this page. There is no justification for rushing/pushing a consumer into a decision. This behaviour is all the more disgusting when used against the elderly or those with behavioural difficulties.

Roof Refurb Lloyds Bank Camberley Surrey

The Mall Camberley Lloyds Bank

Solar reflective paint applied to traditional felt roofing system

Why use a reflective roof coating?
Flat felt roofs absorb up to 70 percent of the solar heat blasting onto the building. By contrast, the best reflective roof coatings reflect up to 80% of solar heat, and can reduce surface temperatures on a roof by 80 degrees.

In turn, this will cut temperatures in the building by up to 10 degrees, increase the effectiveness of the insulation, and cut cooling energy costs by 25% to 70%. It also makes the building more comfortable in hallways or other areas that may not be air conditioned.

The roof will also last longer without as much heat-related cracking and deterioration, saving money and materials in the long run.

Solar paint

Features and Benefits

§ Reduces heat build-up on flat and sloping roofs, limiting thermal movement.
§ Protects roofing from the harmful effects of UV radiation.
§ Contains a ‘leafing’ aluminium pigment to provide a bright reflective finish.
